Proxmox traffic accounting and limits per VM
NexoVirt counts the incoming and outgoing traffic of every Proxmox guest per month. When a guest reaches its limit, the panel notifies, throttles it to a speed you set or suspends it, and lifts that again at the next month, when you add gigabytes or lift the limit for the month.
What it does
Monthly traffic per guest, with a warning, then notify, throttle or suspend.
-
Counted per guest, per month
Received and sent traffic for every guest, from the collected metrics, kept for 13 months. The month follows the guest through a migration.
-
Limits from guest, plan or default
A guest override wins over its plan, a plan over the global default. Count incoming, outgoing or both.
-
A warning at 80 percent
One email, an inbox alert and a guest event before the limit is reached.
-
Notify, throttle or suspend
At the limit the guest is only reported, throttled to a set speed, or shut down. Resellers can set their own throttle speed.
-
Undone automatically
A new month, "Lift for this month" or extra gigabytes that bring usage under the limit restore the speed or start the guest again.
-
Visible to customers
Customers see their usage on the server page. A traffic-suspended server cannot be started from the portal, admins and the API still can.
Why not just use the Proxmox web UI?
Proxmox VE runs the virtualization. NexoVirt adds the layer around it. Traffic limits, task by task:
| Task | Proxmox web UI | NexoVirt |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly traffic of a VM | RRD graphs, no monthly total | A monthly total per guest, 13 months kept |
| Act on a traffic limit | Not available | Notify, throttle or suspend |
| Give a customer more traffic | Not available | Add gigabytes or lift for the month |
How to use it
Up and running in 3 steps, all in the panel.
-
Set the default limit and action in Settings, Traffic, or per plan.
-
Override a single guest on its Limits pane when needed.
-
Watch the Traffic column in the guest list and the card on each guest page.

Traffic limits FAQ
Is traffic counted for guests without a plan?
Yes. Every guest is counted. The global default limit is 0 (unlimited) until you set one.
How is a throttled guest slowed down?
NexoVirt sets a rate limit on the guest's network interface in Proxmox and puts the previous rate back when the throttle ends.
