Proxmox OS templates for VMs and LXC containers

These are the operating systems NexoVirt deploys on Proxmox VE: virtual machines from cloud-init images and containers from Proxmox CT templates. Pick one in the create wizard and the panel downloads the image, applies cloud-init (user, SSH keys, IP) and boots the guest, with no template VM to maintain.

Supported OS templates

21 cloud-init VM templates and 19 container templates, straight from the live catalog.

How do OS templates work in NexoVirt?

A template is a recipe, not a disk. The panel builds every guest from it on demand, on the node you pick.

  • Image URL plus cloud-init

Each VM template stores a cloud image URL and native cloud-init settings: user, SSH keys, IP, nameserver, package upgrade and root SSH. CPU, RAM and disk come from the plan or the wizard.

  • Downloaded per VM, then deleted

The agent downloads the image on the target node, the VM imports it, and the download is removed. No template VMs, no copies per node.

  • LXC from Proxmox CT templates

Containers use the CT templates Proxmox provides, such as Debian or Alpine, picked in the same wizard.

Add your own distro in three steps

Any distribution that publishes a cloud image works, no image building needed.

  1. Copy the cloud image URL

For Ubuntu 24.04 that is https://cloud-images.ubuntu.com/noble/current/noble-server-cloudimg-amd64.img. Debian, Rocky, AlmaLinux and Fedora publish theirs the same way.

  2. Create the template

In Settings, OS templates, pick or create a group, paste the URL and set the cloud-init options. Click "Test image URL" to let a host download it once.

  3. Deploy it

The template appears in the create and reinstall wizards. Pick it, and the panel downloads, imports and boots the VM.

OS templates FAQ

Which operating systems can NexoVirt deploy on Proxmox?

The VM templates in the catalog above as cloud-init virtual machines, and Proxmox CT templates for LXC containers. A VM template is just an image URL plus cloud-init settings, so you can add any distribution that publishes a cloud image.

How do I get an Ubuntu template for Proxmox?

You do not download it by hand. Add a template with the Ubuntu cloud image URL from cloud-images.ubuntu.com, for example noble-server-cloudimg-amd64.img for 24.04, and NexoVirt fetches it on the node every time a VM is created from it.

Are LXC container templates supported?

Yes. Containers are created from Proxmox CT templates such as Debian or Alpine, picked per node in the same wizard. A managed library in the panel decides which ones your users see.

Do I need a template VM on every Proxmox node?

No. NexoVirt keeps no template VMs. The agent downloads the cloud image on the target node, imports it as the new VM disk and deletes the download afterwards.
